Prayer
Dear Lord, please hear my prayer. You are the Lord of all things, creator of all things, and you give us each day to praise you. Please let my soul rejoice for this day, no matter what it brings me, for you have made it. Give me strength to face it, along with your peace, as I devote this time to you. I love you Lord. Amen.
Theme Verse
Psalm 118:24 (NIV) - The Lord has done it this very day. Let us rejoice today and be glad.
Devotional
Each day is a gift. Each day is new. Each day we experience life in a number of ways.
Through our senses.
Through the people who are in our lives.
Through our memories.
Can you think of one thing you experienced today that could be called a gift? Were you able to enjoy the sun and warmth of the day? Was your mind flooded with a beautiful thought? Maybe it was a painful memory? Is it possible to view such a thing as a gift?
Our thoughts and memories are powerful. Some are happy, but others are painful. Those hard memories make it hard to read our theme verse and believe it. Have you struggled some days with those difficult moments and thought to yourself there is nothing to rejoice in?
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus instructs us to come to him. To find rest in him. To let go of those difficult moments and memories as we talk to him. To learn from him. To experience gentleness and humbleness, and find rest for our souls.
Those memories are real and they don’t really ever go away, but you have a place to take them and share them so you can find peace. Those memories are part of who you are, and as you look back you can also see how God was always there.
This world we live in will tell you not to ask for help when you struggle. Who do you reach out to when you’re suffering?
Have you encountered someone in your life who is struggling too? What do you do? Do you listen? Do you help in any way?
Luke 10:29-37 is the story of the good Samaritan. Interestingly, we do not know what kind of day the good Samaritan was having before he came across the man on the side of the road that had been robbed and beaten. But we do know that he stopped to help. Perhaps the good Samaritan had once also been hurt and someone helped him when it was least expected.
Isn’t it funny how God places people in our lives that are either hurting, for you and I to help, or to come alongside us when we are hurting. Jesus instructs us to come to him when we struggle, but Jesus also directs the steps of others to be there for us sometimes. This is the beauty, grace, and glory of the body of Christ in our lives!
If you’re having a bad day, stop and count your blessings, name them. Turn to Jesus in prayer and thank God for them. Then look around you. The people God puts in our lives are often there for a reason.
If you’re having a bad day, consider helping someone. As crazy as that sounds, it is grace in action. Today might be your day to be the good Samaritan for someone in your life.
Today is a new day, and it is the day the Lord has made. As we consider all that we have been through, and how God has seen us through to this very day, let us rejoice and be glad.
